Stuttering is a natural variation in the way some people speak. It is a neurophysiological difference influenced by a genetic component. Stuttering could sound like repetitions, prolongations, or blocks in speech. Stuttering is highly variable, meaning the frequency and amount of tension ranges greatly from moment to moment, day to day, week to week, and on.

A speech therapist can support people who stutter by providing a space where communication is respected and valued in all its forms. Therapy may focus on reducing shame and stigma, increasing self-advocacy and confidence, and exploring ways to navigate real-world speaking situations. Rather than aiming to eliminate stuttering, affirming therapy supports the individualβs goalsβwhether thatβs feeling more comfortable in conversations, reducing avoidance, or connecting with others who stutter. The therapist partners with the person (and family, when appropriate) to foster communication that feels authentic to them.

Stuttering is not caused by parenting, anxiety, or anything a child or caregiver has done "wrong." Itβs a neurophysiological difference resulting in speech that contains moments of stuttering. It is more common than many people realize, affecting approximately 80 million people worldwide. Stuttering can come and go, change over time, and look different from child to child. What matters most is how a child feels about talking and that they are communicating in the way they desire. Caregivers can support their child by listening patiently, showing acceptance, and avoiding pressure to "speak a certain way." Early support from a stuttering-affirming speech therapist can help reduce shame, build confidence, and keep communication joyful and open.
