Stuttering is a natural variation in the way some people speak. It is a neurophysiological difference influenced by a genetic component. Stuttering could sound like repetitions, prolongations, or blocks in speech. Stuttering is highly variable, meaning the frequency and amount of tension ranges greatly from moment to moment, day to day, week to week, and on.

A speech therapist can support people who stutter by providing a space where communication is respected and valued in all its forms. Therapy may focus on reducing shame and stigma, increasing self-advocacy and confidence, and exploring ways to navigate real-world speaking situations. Rather than aiming to eliminate stuttering, affirming therapy supports the individual’s goals—whether that’s feeling more comfortable in conversations, reducing avoidance, or connecting with others who stutter. The therapist partners with the person (and family, when appropriate) to foster communication that feels authentic to them.
